With Super Power Saturday on the horizon, why not watch the sun rise from over the horizon with a very special opportunity?
As the sun emerges from above the surrounding hills, bringing warmth to the autumn morning, the Churnet Valley’s crews will be busy bringing their American beasts to life. Watch as the first fires burn bright in the locomotives bellies, and the hiss of steam signals their awakening for the awaiting crowds. See all the effort that goes into making a steam locomotive ready, from behind the scenes and up close with the volunteers who make it happen.
With the unique spectacle of three USATC S160s being prepared for service, the CVR is opening the sheds early doors to allow visitors to witness the morning duties. Whether you wish to capture this experience through photographs, or just absorb the atmosphere with your own senses, all are welcome to head down to Cheddleton Yard for this one-off event. With sunrise set for 07:54, the event will open from 07:00 and access will be granted to the yard to picture the locomotives and their crews for this first part of the day. No advance booking is required, but visitors are asked to make a £5 donation to the railway with all proceeds going into the Leek Extension appeal, which successfully launched on 11th October with the first train running along the newly laid section of track at Leekbrook Junction. The event will close at around 08:00, in order to allow the locomotives to then start moving around the yard readying themselves for the day’s activities.
