Join Us in Preserving Railway History!

In the enchanting world of heritage railways, every piece of history has a story to tell.

Here at Churnet Valley Railway (CVR), we are passionate about preserving those stories for generations to come. Our recent strides in restoration efforts have been nothing short of remarkable, thanks to the invaluable assistance of a BR WHALE ballast wagon we have on loan. But now, as we set our sights on the future, we have a new opportunity that calls for your support - the acquisition of our own SEALION!

The WHALE wagon, a survivor from the British Railways era, has been invaluable in our ongoing restoration endeavours with its 51-tonne ballast capacity being instrumental in our work, propelling us towards our goal of reopening additional stations and lines in the near future. As we continue this exciting journey of revitalising our beloved railway, we have been looking to enhance our ballasting capacity of which the SEALION provides – being the WHALE’s slightly smaller cousin with a 40-tonne ballast handling capacity.

The opportunity to purchase and transport this SEALION wagon for £5000 has come knocking at our door, and this is where we need your help. We are calling on individuals or groups to donate towards this cause and support the development of the Churnet Valley Railway. Your generosity will play a pivotal role in enhancing our engineering train's capabilities, ensuring a smooth and efficient rebuilding process.

At Churnet Valley Railway, we understand that the behind-the-scenes work may not always receive the glory it deserves. However, it's these efforts that keep our railway thriving and moving forward. With your support, we can turn our dreams into reality and make CVR the best it can be, creating unforgettable experiences for our passengers for years to come. If twenty people/groups are willing to donate £200, then with Gift Aid we will be able to fully cover the cost of this acquisition, but any donations are welcome for as we’ve proved previously multiple small amounts soon build up!

To those who have supported us in the past, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering commitment to our cause. We invite you to join us once again on this thrilling phase of development as we embark on this Sealion adventure together.

Let's ensure that the legacy of railway history lives on, one ballast wagon at a time. Join us, support us, and be a part of our journey into the future. Together, we'll keep the wheels of history turning!
