We have some openings for new volunteers across the railway. Are you interested in railways or just looking for a new activity ? If so we might be the place for you.
There are some opportunities in our Operating Department for staff to train as Crossing Keepers. As the name suggest, you would look after the safe operation of the crossing gates at both Cheddleton & Apesford. You would be required to complete supervised turns, complete a company medical and personal track safety certificate. We are running courses for this immediately. Depending on availability and the willingness to learn this is a relatively quick process and starts you on the rung of the Operating Department.
We also have an opening for existing fireman from other railways to join us. Our Motive Power Department has the need for 4 already qualified fireman. We are using these 4 as a means of testing our process and procedures for accepting qualified staff from other railways, without the need to undertake the traditional route of training. These fireman would need to learn the route, undertake our rules and regulation examination, as well as undertake supervised turns – for someone with the existing skills and can do attitude we hope this can be achieved in 3 months. We operate predominantly foreign locomotives, there are not many railways where you can fire a 2-8-0 locomotive up a steep gradient with the regulator fully open and only getting up to 20mph. Fancy the challenge ?
