Be Part of History: Explore the Newly Extended Churnet Valley Railway!

We’re thrilled to announce the completion of Phase 1 of our exciting restoration project which was formally opened on the 31st December 2024, funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EARDF) with an incredible grant of £1.6 million along with The Garfield Weston Foundation, The Bamford Charitable Trust, The Headley Trust along with private donations and money raised directly by the Railway.

This milestone breathes new life into a part of the Churnet Valley Railway route that hasn’t seen passenger trains since the 1960s, and we’re inviting you to be part of its Phase 1 journey during our Heritage Open Days 2025.

A Unique Experience Awaits:

  • A Journey Through History: Step aboard our train at Froghall Station and experience a revitalized route to the market town of Leek, where we will show you round the site of the yet to be built Leek Station.
  • Explore the Leekbrook Triangle: Travel on all three sides of this historic railway junction—a rare opportunity not seen in nearly 80 years and something not possible on any other heritage railway in the UK.
  • Our train will travel on the section of the Stoke line in our ownership as far as the Network Rail boundary.
  • Behind-the-Scenes Access: Go backstage at our Locomotive & Carraige Workshops at Cheddleton and discover how these historic vehicles are lovingly restored.
  • Stunning Scenery: Enjoy the beauty of the Churnet Valley line and the Cauldon Lowe branch, all from the comfort of your seat.

What’s Included:

  • A full English breakfast to kick off your day in style.
  • A 5-hour guided experience filled with history, scenic views, and exclusive access to areas not normally open to the public.
  • Depature at 10:30 AM from Froghall Station, returning around 3:00 PM.
  • Weather permitting, a special photo opportunity at Leekbrook.

Why This Matters:

This isn’t just a train ride—it’s your chance to celebrate a landmark achievement in preserving our shared heritage. Thanks to the generous support of the EARDF and countless passionate supporters, this restored railway is a testament to the power of community and history coming together.
