Coalfish ... More Useful Than They Sound.

25/06/2024 (2 months ago)   General News

The Churnet Valley Railway has seen the arrival of some new rolling stock this week in the form of 4 MHA “Coalfish” wagons.

Built in the late 1990’s they were made using the chassis of old HAA “ Merry Go Round” coal wagons and a total of 1,150 were produced, they were mainly used for ballast, spoil, stone, and anything else required on a engineers train making them a versatile and useful wagon.

A recent decision by Network Rail to phase out all two axled wagons from the national network has seen the opportunity arise to purchase these vehicles and save them from being scrapped after 26 years service as a Coalfish, just like much of our other heritage rolling stock and locomotives have been saved before them.
