Churnet Valley Railway Takes Children on a Historic Journey through Steam Power Education

After the success of our 2023 Steam Science Show, Churnet Valley Railway is thrilled to welcome back the team from R.O.L.L., the educational hub of Boardroom Gaming Café, to deliver a fun and interactive educational experience for children and adults alike. It is sure to be a massive hit, linking the community to a vital part of the UK’s industrial history.

Prepare to be dazzled by our bigger, better, and bolder Steam Science Show, where families and like-minded folks will uncover the secrets of steam power and the forces acting on a locomotive. With an array of exciting activities, tabletop, and oversized games, this event promises an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. Join us for a journey like no other!

Investing in the Future Through the Past

Churnet Valley Railway, in addition to being a top-rated attraction with tonnes to do for young and old, is dedicated to preserving our shared history and heritage, and few preservation tools are as powerful and impactful as education. Our well-preserved and expertly restored locomotives and passenger carriages provide a unique backdrop for educational excursions, enriching children’s knowledge in a practical, hands-on manner.

We are excited to be hosting this incredible event here at the railway. Science, engineering, and history have always gone hand in hand, and this event pulls the three together like never before. If we wish to keep railways like us alive, it is important to invest in new and exciting experiences like this. → Gregory Wilson, General Manager, Churnet Valley Railways

All Aboard for a Steam-Powered Adventure

Our upcoming event (which we’re very excited about!) is crafted to engage children at multiple levels. They will get the opportunity to board a steam-powered locomotive and take a ride through the stunning Staffordshire Moorlands before taking part in a highly interactive demonstration that will have them learn all about the power of steam using imploding atmospheric cans and fire expansion, and even experiment with potential and kinetic energy by building their own CD balloon hovercrafts.

The journey starts at Froghall station (easily accessible from Stoke-on-Trent, Uttoxeter, and Macclesfield), before heading to the charming village of Consall – only accessible by rail – for the demonstration, and then catching the return train to Froghall.

It’s science and history made fun and hands-on! In total, just under 2 hours will be spent at the Consall site with the R.O.L.L. team and our volunteers. A tuck shop will be available, or maybe consider arriving early or stopping on for a bite to eat at our Froghall Tea Room. This will be running alongside our regular mid-week breakfast and lunch dining trains.
